Our shared ancestors created the first original forms using their hands and soil. These basins were created out of necessity, facilitating evolution and manifesting the necessities and ideals of the soil.

The method used is a modified version of the plaster scagliola process, an Italian Renaissance technique used to imitate precious stones. The modified process incorporates soil from the River Arno and allows for the depth and colour of the organic material to be revealed.

I begin by creating clay mounds over which I press the gypsum and sifted soil. The gypsum acts as a cementitious binder in the process. After the form has solidified, the clay is removed from the interior, and the colour and patterning are revealed through rasping and grinding of the interior surface. The exterior texture is left untouched, revealing the process of the work.

Each bowl is finished with a natural wax sealant
