K2122 | Branchwork candelabra
Unique – 2021
Material –
Steel frame, brass, gypsum, stone dust, stone wax
Info –
Branchwork pieces are an extension of the ideas I am considering in my practice; sculptural balance, organic formations and their relationship in composition to one another.
The pieces are made through a slow process of layering and refining material. Each branch begins as a steel armature, over which a stone dust, gypsum and a paper mix is applied in gradual batches. Between each batch the material is articulated, carved by hand, and refined. The candle spikes are each handforged and left unsealed so as to encourage a natural brass patina. The final sculpture is sealed with a fire-resistant wax finish.
The piece has 20 branches and 17 hand-forged brass candle spikes. The entire candelabra branch may be removed from the base for ease of storage and handling.
