K2129 | from the river bank
Unique – 2021 – Produced during residency in Florence Italy.
Material –
Earth soil, Gypsum, Wax sealant.
Info –
Formed and cast on the banks of the River Arno in Florence, Italy, my intention was to capture a moment in a fluid process and document the material and substance of the setting.
Using a modified Renaissance plaster technique called scagliola, ground soil was rolled, mixed, and integrated with gypsum plaster. The wet material was pressed into a hand-dug form on the banks of the River Arno. The sculpture took form and dried while buried, absorbing both the shape of the cavity and the unique pigmentation of the organic material.
The sculpture’s texture, colour, and patterning are a document of the regions unique soil, organic pigmentation and traditional artisan techniques.
The work was created while in residency at Numeroventi, with Galerie Philia.
